I've often documented my love of early 1980s Fleer. So many fun and quirky photos in the 1981-1985 years. By 1986-1988 they were definitely getting more professional in their composition but there was still a fair amount of personality. From 1989 on, at least until the late 1990s, their photos got very boring.
I had the 1986 Fleer mini set but not the 1987. These sets are interesting because they are completely different photos from the base set. For $5 for a lot with a full set, I was glad to scoop it up.
Here are the cards that I found most interesting. Going through the set it seems that Fleer intentionally went for close-ups for the mini-format cards, perhaps thinking the player would be hard to see in an action photo. There are a few action photos but they are closely cropped.
There was also advertised a 1991 Pacific Nolan Ryan set. It wasn't exactly a full set though. I had most of it already but I imagine I will still need a few after sorting. Will have lots of extras for trade.
I was able to put together this cool sequence though.
There were a few other random cards in the lot as well. That Turf Warriors card is textured, I guess to feel like real turf.
LMK what Ryan's you need to finish the set (sets). In 88' Fleer made the mini's glossy, look really good.

ReplyDeleteI didn't add one of those Fleer Mini sets to my collection until a few years after they came out.
ReplyDeleteBut I wanted one... especially the 1986 set as soon as I discovered that Canseco had a card all by himself.
I had some of the Topps mini cards as a kid, but I don't think that I ever owned any from Fleer.
