Wallet card at an old grocery sign

Here's a mysterious sign recently uncovered on 7th Avenue. Cu? Grocery.

I couldn't figure out what Cu stood for. I thought maybe "Cuban" but I found this photo from the 1980s which seems to indicate a longer word. Whatever it is, that sign probably last saw sunlight sometime in the 1970s.
