I've decided to go from newest to oldest in these posts, starting with 1989 and eventually getting back to 1963. Here is a program from Philadelphia's Steve Carlton Night.
July 29, 1989. In the actual game, Philadelphia's Bruce Ruffin and Pittsburgh's Bob Walk (a former Phillie) pitched like Carlton for seven innings. With the game 1-1 in the eighth, the Phillies brought in Jeff Parrett, who gave up an RBI single to Glenn Wilson to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. However, the Phillies came right back in the bottom of the inning - Von Hayes walked, and then John Kruk hit a two run HR. Later in the inning Charlie Hayes added a three-run blast as the home team won, 6-2.
Fun centerfold of a variety of fun photos of Carlton on and off the field.
Check out the 1972 family portrait.
The only advertising in the program. M'm! M'm! Good!
Not bad for a lefty, LOL.
ReplyDeleteWilson was a Phillie too - '84-'87. He was known for his strong throwing arm in right field.
ReplyDeletePretty cool tribute. I'm looking forward to more of these posts!
ReplyDeleteVery cool program. I have the Schmidt from the following season and think it's cool that they kept the same design (they used his MVP trophy instead of Carlton's CY Young trophy). I wonder if the Phillies made anymore outside of these two hall of famers.
