1981 Topps Record Breaker: Steve Carlton

The front: The very rare pitcher-wearing-a-batting-helmet.

The back: Carlton finished his career with 4,136 strikeouts, a record since broken by Randy Johnson, whose 4,875 strikeouts are most by a lefty and second-most all time. In 2019 CC Sabathia became only the third southpaw with 3,000 strikeouts, finishing his career with 3,093. With Sabathia’s retirement, the active leader in strikeouts among lefthanders is Cole Hamels with 2,558.

  1. This card always looked weird to me because of that helmet. It was almost as if he was going to a costume party.

  2. 1981 was the first year I started collecting... so there's a chance that this was the card the made me become such a big fan of Carlton. Either that or the one or two cards he had in the 1981 Fleer set.
