1981 Topps Tommy Boggs

The front: Following through the delivery at Shea Stadium. His powder blue uniform nicely matches the tarp and several caps in the stands. This would be July 31, 1980, when Boggs allowed three runs in 7.1 innings as the Braves lost to the Mets 3-0.

The back: Boggs was selected behind Bill Almon and ahead of Lonnie Smith in 1974. Other first-rounders the Rangers passed on included Dale Murphy, Garry Templeton, Lance Parrish, Willie Wilson and Rick Sutcliffe.

The player: 1980 looked to be a breakout year for Boggs (12-9, 3.42) but he had a disastrous 1981, going 3-13 with a 4.10 ERA. Injuries limited him to just 19 major league games after that.

The man: Boggs has been head baseball coach at Concordia University for the past ten seasons.

My collection: I have 12 of his cards, from 1977 to 1983. I would be interested in trading for 1985 TCMA Oklahoma City 89ers #7.
