1981 Topps Greg Minton

The front: The side view is a nice variation on this classic baseball pose.

The back: Minton played high school baseball at Carlsbad High School in California.

The player: Greg Minton spent 16 years in the major leagues as a reliever for the Giants and Angels. He was the Giants’ closer from 1980 to 1984. His best season was 1982, when he went 10-4 with 30 saves and a 1.83 ERA, making the All-Star team and finishing in the top 10 in Cy Young and MVP voting. Overall, in 710 games he went 59-65 with 150 saves and a 3.10 ERA.

The man: Minton was known early in his career as “Moon Man” for his unusual personality, highlighted by events like hijacking the team bus and flooding a minor league ballpark, though he mellowed out more later in his career, especially after signing with the Angels. He is now a youth baseball coach in California.

My collection: I have 43 of his cards, from 1977 to 1991. I would be interested in trading for 1983 Fleer Star Stickers #54.
