Player Profile: Brent Bowers

I have three cards of Brent Bowers. This one is from 1994 Classic.

Playing career: Brent Bowers played in 21 games for the Orioles in 1996, hitting .308 with 0 HR and 3 RBI.

Interesting facts: As a manager for the independent-league Edmonton Capitals in 2010, Bowers got in an argument with umpire Billy Van Raaphorst, who is openly gay. During the argument, Bowers bent over and grabbed his own ankles, while saying, "I ought to kick your ass, you faggot." The incident garnered nationwide attention and Bowers resigned a week later.

Where he is now: Owns Triple Crown Baseball Academy in Schererville, IN.

My memories: I remember hearing about the Van Raaphorst incident. It certainly colored the way I looked at a previously obscure minor league baseball card.

Google Autocomplete results: He is fourth when you type Brent Bow, between Brent Bowen, an attorney in Texas, and Brent Bowles, Direct Marketing Program Manager at Wells Fargo. Another prominent Brent Bowers is a bowling coach in Kansas.

Coming up next: The next profile will be Cedrick Bowers.
