Player Profile: Mike Aviles

I have two cards of Mike Aviles. This one is from 2008 Stadium Club First Day Edition.

Playing career: Mike Aviles has been a good-hit, decent-field shortstop, first for the Royals, now for the Red Sox. He hit .325 with 10 HR and 51 RBI in his rookie year in 2008 to finish fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting.

Where he is now: This year he is hitting .260 with 9 HR and 43 RBI. Last night he went 1-5 in Boston's 10-8 loss to the Yankees.

My memories: As a Royal I rooted for him because he is a local New Yorker. Therefore I was disappointed when he was traded to the Red Sox.

Interesting facts: Gives off-season baseball lessons at Professional Baseball Instruction in Upper Saddle River, NJ.

He is the nephew of former Red Sox and Phillies infielder Ramon Aviles.

Google Autocomplete results: He is fourth when you type Mike A, between Mike Arteagas, referring to Arteaga’s Fitness Center in Poughkeepsie, and Mike and Molly Cast, referring to a television show. There do not appear to be any other prominent Mike Avileses.

Coming up next: The next profile will be Ramon Aviles.
