Player Profile: Erick Aybar

I have three cards of Erick Aybar. This one is from 2009 Topps.

Playing career: Erick Aybar has been the regular shortstop for the Angels since 2008. 2011 was his best season, hitting .279 with 10 HR and 59 RBI while winning his first gold glove.

Where he is now: In 83 games this season he is hitting .263 and last night hit his third home run of the year in the Angels' 6-5 loss to the Yankees.

My memories: I remember him and Chone Figgins in the 2009 ALCS, bundled up against the New York October cold, miscommunicating on a pop-up in Game One, allowing it to fall in for an RBI hit and setting the tone for the series.

Interesting facts: Angels fans call him “Admiral Aybar”. He is the brother of Willy Aybar.

Google Autocomplete results: He is fourth when you type Erick, between Erick Sermon, a rapper from Brentwood, Long Island, and Ericka Lee, ex-girlfriend of rapper Drake. There do not appear to be any other prominent Erick Aybars.

Coming up next: The next profile will be Willy Aybar.

  1. My memory of Aybar occur during the minors. I was in attendance and he's the first batter of the game. He showed his quickness when he hit the ball what looks to be a double turned into inside the park homerun thanks to fielding mistakes.
