Player Profile: Matt Anderson

I have eight cards of Matt Anderson. This one is from 2003 Upper Deck.

Playing career: The number one overall pick in the 1997 draft, Matt Anderson came up with the Tigers in 1998 and went 5-1 with a 3.27 ERA. Unfortunately, injuries prevented him from ever coming close to those same numbers again.

My memories: I remember there was a lot of hype about him, as he could throw the ball over 100 MPH consistently, kind of like Arodis Chapman. I also remembered him as being very tall, though apparently he’s “only” 6 foot 4 inches.

Where he is now: Attempted a comeback attempt this spring with the Phillies but was released before the start of the season.

Interesting stories: Took part in an octopus-throwing competition on the same day he tore a muscle in 2002, leading many to link the two incidents, though Anderson blames the injury on too much weightlifting.

Google Autocomplete results: He is first when you type Matt Ande, ahead of Matt Anderson Hockey, referring to the Devils’ minor leaguer. Another prominent Matt Anderson is a stuntman who has appeared in numerous movies and TV shows such as 24 and Young Indiana Jones.

Coming up next: The next profile will be Mike Anderson.
