Steve Jeltz takes a lead off of first base.

"Wah! Wah! Wah!"

"But zee war eez over!" Command Sergeant Major William Jeltz was between wars; in his 20 years of service in the Army he served in both Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the Army he served another 20 years in the Army Reserves. His son Steve Jeltz was the first Black baseball player at the University of Kansas, played eight seasons in the major leagues, was a bail bondsman and bounty hunter, and is involved in various coaching and charitable endeavors.

  1. Bounty hunter? That's a pretty interesting post-career job.

  2. I don't know what's more impressive -- William's military service, Steve teaching himself how to switch-hit at the MLB level, or the fact that he was a bounty hunter. Great cartoons and great research, regardless!
