Here are the contents of the smaller box from Saturday's garage sale pickup. Smaller box but possibly more interesting cards. A little older cards, at least.
OK, not everything in the box was all that interesting. Whole lot of 1988 and 1992 Topps Mets.
More cards that I didn't need, but some good trade bait. 1980-1982 Topps cards, just about all Hall-of-Famers except for a few Mets. And 1984 Donruss is a set that is very unusual to see in a lot like this.
Some oddballs I already had, or don't collect.
Some cards that I did need, I know I need lots of '88 Topps Opening Day and '87 Drake's. The one Cap'n Crunch card was a Mattingly I needed which is awesome. I also needed that Willie McGee sticker for my 1988 stickerbook.
But like the other box, it was the minor league cards that sold me. Very heavy on the Mets here. These are the 1988 Tidewater Mets. Someone pulled Gregg Jefferies back in the 1980s and left these ever since. Highlighting a pitcher posing as a batter and a batter posing as a pitcher.
There were four Mets team sets from 1986. I haven't looked to see who might be missing, I'm guessing Jefferies was in one of these too. I just put a few of my favorite photos on top, including a trainer named Rainer.
When I leafed through the box and saw these, I knew for sure I would buy it. You just don't see 1981 TCMA cards every day. It's the Toledo Mud Hens, Columbus Clippers and Tidewater Tides. Big names were pulled out from the Yankees and Mets (Righetti, Backman, Orosco) but I think all the Mud Hens are in there (none of them made it big). There were a few duplicates within the Clippers. The stars are gone but it's fun to see the guys who never made it, like Bill Showalter when he was just a young Buck.
There was just a little bit of vintage baseball, all cards I had and in rough shape, but always worth having around.
A few football cards from the same era as well, which is nice as I likely need some of them.
Seems like you got a decent deal.
ReplyDeleteSchmidt wins it. A lot of good ones in that group though, including Carlton.
Glenn Burke is a good one for trivia buffs.
Minor League Mets cards are always cool. Love your comment about when Bill Showalter was "just a young Buck." Chef's kiss.
ReplyDeleteTerry Blocker is a nice outfielder's name.
ReplyDeleteLove the young Showalter! His days with our Yankees may be numbered...
'87 Drake's are the highlight for me.
ReplyDeleteGarage sales, man I miss hitting thise up on the weekends.
ReplyDeleteThose old Tides unis were not very attractive.
