1981 Topps Ruppert Jones

The front: Great photo, classic swing at Yankee Stadium.

The back: Jones’s 18 stolen bases trailed Willie Randolph (30) and Bobby Brown (27).

The player: Ruppert Jones was the first Mariner star, hitting .263 with 24 HR and 76 RBI in 1977, the franchise’s first season. Unfortunately, his career after that was starcrossed with injuries and illness, and he only occasionally was able to return to all-star caliber play. In twelve seasons with six teams, he played in 1,331 games, hitting .250 with 147 HR and 579 RBI.

The man: He recently retired from a 30-year career as public relations executive and business development specialist for Boon Group, an insurance company in San Diego.

My collection: I have 33 of his cards, from 1977 to 1988. I would be interested in trading for 1978 Hostess #121.
