Last time was a 7-0 shutout for 1962. Will this be closer?
Bill Tuttle is all business at the batting cage in Yankee Stadium, with the new modern scoreboard (introduced in 1959) dominating the background, along with someone in street clothes. Meanwhile he's got a golfball-sized wad of chewing tobacco in his cheek. Tuttle had a solid career as an outfielder for the Tigers, A's and Twins from 1952 to 1963. In 1,270 games he hit .259 with 67 HR and 443 RBI. After his playing career he opened a bar and a whiskey distillery. In 1993 Tuttle was diagnosed with oral cancer. He began a campaign of awareness of the dangers of chewing tobacco, speaking to MLB teams and youth organizations. Joe Garagiola worked closely with Tuttle on this campaign, and Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron joined him in an address to the US Surgeon General in 1994. He died of complications from the cancer in 1998.Larry Herndon also has a batting-cage photo, albeit a more relaxed one. Herndon made his big league debut with the Cardinals in 1974 but played almost all of his career with the Giants (1976-1981) and Tigers (1982-1988). With the Giants he was a decent hitter, good fielder with some speed. After he was traded to the Tigers he immediately developed into more of a slugger. After six seasons with 23 total HR for the Giants, he hit 24 in his first season in Detroit. He hit .333 in the 1984 World Series and caught the final out. Overall in 1,537 games he hit .274 with 107 HR and 550 RBI. After his playing career he was a minor- and major-league coach, and is now retired.

both are great photos...I'll go with 87'

ReplyDeleteThis is a close one. I'll go with the '62.
ReplyDeleteSad to hear about Tuttle passing away from complications with cancer. Definitely made me think about Gwynn. He gets my vote. 1962.
