Cake or gum? 1977 Jim Spencer

Last time it was a 10-0 shutout for gum. Will cake get on the board here?

Two very different photos here. Hostess has Spencer posing at the batting cage at the brand new Yankee Stadium. He's wearing a white cap and a blue jersey with an open V-neck. Topps has Spencer in an all-black uniform, taking a pickoff throw at Oakland. Billy North is back in plenty of time. The White Sox played in three day games at Oakland in 1976; Spencer played 1B in all three and North was on first at least once in all three games, two of which were won by Oakland. In those three games Spencer went just 1-for-14. North was 4-for-9 with 3 walks and 3 runs scored.

Jim Spencer played fifteen seasons in the major leagues for five teams. He won Gold Gloves with the Angels and White Sox, was an All Star with the Rangers, and won a World Series with the Yankees. Overall in 1,553 games he hit .250 with 146 HR and 599 RBI. After his playing career he worked in  restaurant and real estate business, and was a baseball coach at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. He died of a heart attack in 2002.

  1. Gum. I remember Spencer when he played on the A's. Sad to hear that he passed away at such a young age.

  2. Bill North cameo -- automatically gum.

  3. Looks like the answer is no. I usually like to see the player's face well, but that's a really good action shot, and you can see both faces clearly but it's obvious it's a card of Spencer and not North. Gum.
