The card, in brief: I like the photos where you can see the lampposts in the parking lot behind left field at Shea Stadium.
Playing career, in brief: Clay Carroll originally came up with the Milwaukee Braves in 1964, but was best known for being a relief ace for the Big Red Machine in the early 1970s. He was a two-time All Star who led the NL in saves in 1972. He did not get to enjoy both World Series wins for the Reds, as he was traded after the 1975 season to the White Sox. He ended his career with stints for the Cardinals in '77 and the Pirates in '78. Overall in 731 games he went 96-73 with 143 saves and a 2.94 ERA. He was just as good in October, going 4-2 with 2 saves and a 1.39 ERA in 22 postseason games.
Post-career, in brief: After his career he worked in construction. He suffered a terrible tragedy in 1985 when his mentally ill stepson shot and killed Carroll's wife and son. Carroll was shot in the face but survived. Today he continues to be active in Reds events and fantasy camps.
My collection: I have 16 of his cards, from 1966 to 1978. I would be interested in trading for 1965 Topps #461.
