Vintage Equipment: 1978 Topps

Larry Demery's glove has something written on it - looks like "JAPO 44". Demery was #44, I don't know if Japo was a nickname or something?

This photo of Jim Rooker looks like it was taken around the same time as Demery's. He has his #19 on his glove, which is not unusual except that it is in Roman numerals! According to a Uni-Watch article, Willie Stargell and Vida Blue did that as well. I'll have to keep an eye out.
Speaking of Blue, I had to include this card where he wrote his name on his undershirt.
Moving on to the usual parade of stolen bats, starting with Blue's teammate Matt Alexander, #2, who has the bat of #3, Rodney Scott.
#15 Ike Hampton borrowed the powerful bat of #12 Don Baylor.
Finally, #23 Jerry Mumphrey grabbed a couple of bats for his shot. Clearly visible is bat #44, which belonged to Ken Reitz.

  1. Ha! I was just looking at my 1978 cards this past weekend, saw the Blue, and thought how it would be a great card for your series!

  2. I love those 78's. It is interesting how players probably just grabbed or were loaned equipment for photos.

  3. Larry looks like he might just be under the influence of something. Of course, given the timeframe, and the team, that wouldn't be very surprising.
