1981 Topps Dane Iorg

 

The front: Pretty simple pregame shot at Shea Stadium.

The back: The Iorg brothers were teammates at BYU.

The player: Dane Iorg is the rare player whose postseason play far outshone his regular season play. During the regular season Iorg was a parttime outfielder-IB for four teams over ten seasons, only twice appearing in more than 100 games. He had a solid .276 lifetime batting average, but had little power or speed and did not walk much. However, in four postseason series he never hit lower than .500. He was a hero for the Cardinals in the 1982 World Series, hitting .529 with four doubles, helping them beat the Brewers. Three years later, he turned from St. Louis hero to villain, as his 2--run single erased a 1-0 deficit as the Royals came from behind, with umpire help, to stun the Cardinals.

The man: After his career he went into a career in sales, first in lumber and now as Presidential Executive of Synergy, a multi-level marketing company that sells nutritional supplements.
