Last time 1962 cruised to an easy victory, getting 7 out of 8 votes. Is another '62 rout up next?
Battle of the backup catchers here. Cuno Barragan's name was misspelled by Topps, but they gave him a great photo, playing catch in front of a wall pockmarked by many previous errant throws. Barragan hit a home run in his first major league at-bat, but never hit another, hitting .202 in 69 games between 1961 and 1963. He is now retired and living in Sacramento. There is a great write-up on Barragan on the All-Time Portland Beavers blog.
Marc Sullivan is shown looking a little nervous in the batters box at Tigers Stadium. Sullivan was a highly touted catching prospect coming out of the University of Florida. The GM of the team that drafted him in the 2nd round in 1979 was his dad, Haywood Sullivan. In his time in the Red Sox organization he could never get over the stigma that he was getting his opportunities because he was the boss's son. He might have been better off in another organization. Though he was considered an excellent defensive catcher and handler of pitchers, Sullivan hit just .186 with 5 HR and 28 RBI in 137 games over five seasons. He is now a real estate investor in Florida.
1962. Cubs + wall shot = easy choice for me.
ReplyDeleteYeah, gotta go with the '62. Even the uni is very nice.
ReplyDeleteLove the Barragan card. Actually, he just signed it for me recently through the mail.

ReplyDeleteI was gonna go with Cuno even before I saw the plug, so thanks for that!
ReplyDelete'62 in a walk.
ReplyDeleteI'll give my vote to poor Sullivan just so he doesn't get shut out (but seriously Cuno deserves the win here!)
