The front: Great photo at Shea Stadium – the colors really
pop here. This must be August 3, 1980. Falcone pitched well, allowing two runs
in five innings. The Astros ended up winning the game in the tenth inning on a
home run by Cesar Cedeno. The Astros 3B coach in the background is Bob Lillis.
The back: Another cousin of Pignatano, John Franco, went on
to a long career with the Mets.
The player: Pete Falcone pitched ten seasons in the major
leagues, mostly for the Cardinals and Mets. In 325 games he went 70-90 with a
4.07 ERA.
The man: Falcone now runs a catering business in Louisiana.
His son Joey served as a combat medic in Iraq and Afghanistan, and later played
in the Yankees organization. He shared his thoughts on baseball cards with this
blog in March.
My collection: I have 20 of his cards, from 1976 to 1985. I
would be interested in trading for 1977 Hostess #24.
The Mets really luck out with this set. So do the Pirates. Always wondered why they got their team colors in the design while the majority of teams did not.
