The card, in brief: It may not be a fashionable opinion, but I like off-center photos like this on cards.
Playing career, in brief: John Vukovich holds one of baseball's more dubious records: his .161 batting average is the lowest of any player with 550+ at-bats. He played parts of ten seasons for three teams, mostly the Phillies, who appreciated his defensive prowess and positive attitude. By the time this card came out he had already been traded back to Philadelphia, as Sparky Anderson had little patience for Vukovich's weak bat. He won a World Series ring with the team in 1980.
Post-playing career, in brief: After his playing career he became a coach, returning to the Phillies in 1987 and staying with the team until he died of cancer in 2007.
My collection: I have six of his cards, from 1973 to 1981. I would be interested in trading for 1980 Topps Burger King Philadelphia Phillies #8.

ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of off-center cards as well.
