Bell Atlantic was one of the "Baby Bells" that was created after the Bell breakup of 1984. It merged with New York's NYNEX in 1997, then merged with GTE in 2000 to create Verizon. So this payphone would date to the late 1990s. It's rare to find any payphones left with the Bell Atlantic logo, but this one soldiers on at the corner of Park Avenue and 51st Street.

NYNEX. Haven't heard that name in a while!
ReplyDeleteNot living anywhere near a big city, it's been years since I've even seen a payphone! I like knowing that there's still a few of them around though. When I was a kid we used to use them to find out what time it was when we were out roaming about. Somebody would just stop at one and dial "0" to get the operator and ask what time it was. I wonder now if any of those gals ever got tired of telling little kids what time it was?
