Apollo Coasts on Toward Moon! Also, Franco names Prince Juan Carlos his successor. Many years later when he was King, I guess he gave a lot of money to NYU. I got a history degree there, and the history building was the King Juan Carlos Center. He is still alive (85 years old), and living in exile in Dubai due to corruption scandals.
A big ad from a group advocating for a Second Avenue subway. They got their wish, though it would take another 48 years for the subway to actually open (2017).
A movie about J. Robert Oppenheimer - that's a sure hit! Even more interesting was the little story about the burglars who stole paintings from Will Rogers's estate and used one of Rogers's lariats to aid in their escape.
The Mets were off and the Yankees rained out. The game that the Times focused on instead was the Giants' 14-13 slugfest win over the Dodgers. Only 12 years since those teams left NY, so I imagine there was still a lot of local interest in those teams.
A nice tribute to underrated Yankees star Red Rolfe, who had died earlier in the month. Rolfe was an all-star for four straight seasons, 1937-1940.
There was a second section, which I read quite a way through before realizing it was actually from Tuesday's paper, not Friday's. I must have messed up when I first organized the papers. Anyway, I had taken a picture of this page just to show the kinds of information people relied on a newspaper for, from international weather to when the mail ships would be coming in.

ReplyDeleteSeeing that last page really makes me think that I was born in the wrong era. And that's kind of interesting to hear that Juan Carlos is still alive. He's not as old as I would've thought either.
