Wood vs. Wood #134

Last time, 1962 cruised to a 7-1 victory. Who will come out on top this time?

A couple of relievers in very similar poses here. Billy Hoeft was originally a starting pitcher for the Tigers when he came up in 1952. He had a terrific season in 1955, going 16-7 with a 2.99 ERA, leading the AL with 7 shutouts. He won 20 games the next season, despite his ERA ballooning to 4.06. After a couple more undistinguished seasons in the Tigers' rotation, he was traded twice within a six-week period in 1959, ending up in Baltimore, where he was converted to a reliever. He was a relief ace for Baltimore through the 1962 season, when he was traded to the Giants. After one year the Giants traded him (and the previous WvW, #133 Felipe Alou) to the Braves. The Braves released him after one season, and he had brief stints with the Cubs and Giants before retiring for good in 1966, with a 97-101 record, 3.94 ERA and 33 saves. After his career he had a long career in corporate sales roles. He died in 2010.

Rich Yett came up with the Twins in 1985, pitched in one game, and was traded to Cleveland for Bert Blyleven. He was a reliever in 1986, and transitioned to a full-time starter in 1987. He failed to find much success in Cleveland, and after four seasons and 131 games the Indians released him after the 1989 season. He went back to the team he started with, the Twins, for four games in 1990, ending his major league career. In 136 games he went 22-24 with 2 saves and a 4.95 ERA. At last report he was living in Arizona, coaching high school baseball and working in a grocery store.

  1. Rich Yett. Great name, solid card here. Taking the '87.

Incidentally, Bill Wetmore feeling the need to stamp a card is strange to me. Haven't seen that before!

  2. Voting for the '87, only because I always thought his name was amusing. "Excuse me, are you Rich Yett?" "No, that's why I'm working at a grocery store..."

  3. Hoeft for the old-school Orioles logo.

  4. OTOH, I like Yett's mustache. On the other, that Oriole logo is way better than Wahoo. Vote for Hoeft.
