By far the biggest story of September 20, 1938, was the Anglo-French proposal, led by British prime minister Neville Chamberlain, to allow Germany to annex the Sudentenland from Czechoslovakia, with the Czech government rejecting the proposal. Ten days late Chamberlain, French prime minister Edoard Daladier, Hitler and Mussolini would formalize the annexation, leading Chamberlain to famously declare "peace in our time".
In the US it was the day of the Democratic primaries. In many races more liberal candidates backed by President Roosevelt triumphed in what was considered a "purge" of the party. Massachusetts representative John J. Foley was running for State Senator. He does not appear to have won.
The Red Sox had a better day than Foley did. Out in St. Louis to take on the Browns, they swept a doubleheader 12-8 and 7-2. (The other Boston team, then known as the Bees, were rained out.) In the opener, the Red Sox came back from being down 7-5 in the ninth inning, putting up a 7-run ninth. In the second game, it was again a 7-run inning for Boston. Down 2-0 in the sixth inning, Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx (who had scored two runs in the opener) led off the inning with a home run, and capped it with an RBI triple as the Red Sox batted around.
"Qualified by Experience" is kind of catchy.
