Cards and vintage stuff: September 12-14, 1955

September 12-14, 1955 were relatively light news days. There was unrest in Turkey and Morocco, and a dockworker strike on both coasts.

The Direct Mail Advertising Association held it's 38th annual convention at the Morrison Hotel in Chicago. According to the DMAA Reporter's Henry Hoke, "This was my 31st annual DMAA convention . . . and it was by far the finest." If you are interested in 1950s direct mail marketing or business conventions, you can check out Hoke's extensive writeup on the event.

As for Chicago baseball teams during the convention - does anyone know why the Cubs only played one game between September 11 and September 17? Was there a lot of rain? On the 13th they hosted the Phillies and lost, 10-0. The White Sox were in Baltimore, didn't play on the 12th but had doubleheaders on the 13th and 14th, splitting both. (The 13th doubleheader was due to an August rainout). The Sox split both, losing the first game and winning the second in both instances. George Kell was on fire during these games, with eight hits in fourteen at bats. This included an RBI double in Chicago's 6-run ninth inning to come from behind on the 13th, and another in the 8th inning of the second game on the 14th to provide a key insurance run.
