1981 Topps Buddy Solomon

The front: Simple headshot at Shea Stadium.

The back: He was actually known as "Buddy J". In 1978 Eddie Solomon announced that he wanted to be known by his nickname "Buddy J". "Eddie" on his first two Topps cards, he became "Buddy" for Topps from then on. However, Donruss and Fleer both insisted on calling him "Eddie".

The player: Solomon pitched ten seasons in the major leagues for six teams, mostly the Braves and Pirates. In 191 games (95 starts), he went 36-42 with a 4.00 ERA.

The man: Solomon had some personal difficulties, including some implication with the Pirates cocaine scandal. However, he was generally remembered as a good man and loving father. Unfortunately, he died in a car accident in 1986 at the age of 34. There is a great write-up on Solomon on the 1982 Topps Blog.

My collection: I have ten of his cards, from 1975 to 1982. I would be interested in trading for 1990 Target Dodgers #754.
