The front: Hoyt fights off the spring chill with a White Sox
windbreaker.
The back: Eleven years of minor league stat lines fill up
Hoyt’s card back. For a very long time, Topps would include a player’s minor
league stats if they had three years or less of major league experience.
The player: Hoyt was one of the best pitchers in baseball
from 1980 to 1983, going 61-28 and posting some of the lowest BB/9 numbers in
the majors. After he slipped to 13-18 in 1984, the White Sox traded him to the
Padres for shortstop prospect Ozzie Guillen. He rebounded to 16-8 in 1985, but
was then arrested for drug possession four times between 1986 and 1987, quickly
ending his career.
The man: Arrested again for drunk driving in 1991, Hoyt
seems to have kept a low profile since.
My collection: I have 27 of his cards, from 1981 to 1987. I
would be interested in trading for 1983 Fleer Star Stickers #159.
