The front: Nice action shot at Shea Stadium. Urrea appeared
in three different day games at Shea in 1980, allowing four runs (three earned)
in 3.1 innings.
The back: Urrea is Mexican-American. Not sure why he was
called “Chief” – in fact I could find no reference to this nickname or any
particular Native American affiliation for him.
The player: This was Urrea’s last season with the Cardinals;
in December of 1980 he and seven other players were traded to San Diego for
Rollie Fingers and Gene Tenace. (One commenter on Cardboard Gods called it the
“Urrea Seaman Swisher-Fingers trade”. Despite a good season in 1981 (2-2, 2.39
ERA in 38 appearances) he did not return to American professional baseball,
though he did pitch in the Mexican League in 1982.
The man: Urrea seems to have kept a low profile after his
playing career. Not sure what he is up to today.
My collection: I have eight of his cards, from 1978 to 1982.
I would be interested in trading for 1976 TCMA Arkansas Travelers #9.
