The front: Not much to say, just a simple headshot.
The back: Langford’s impressive complete-game streak is the
most extreme example of Billy Martin’s 1980 Oakland A’s extreme usage of their
starting pitchers.
The player: The other starters from that 1980 team (Brian
Kingman, Matt Keough, Steve McCatty, Mike Norris) all saw their careers
collapse pretty quickly due to arm trouble. Langford actually pitched quite
well in 1981 and reasonably well in 1982 before injuries limited him to just 24
starts over the next four years. Langford blames his decline on being hit by a
line drive on the elbow in 1983, not his usage by Billy Martin in 1980.
The man: Langford has been a minor league pitching coach in
the Blue Jays organization since 1996.
My collection: I have 19 of his cards, from 1978 to 1986. I
would be interested in trading for 1978 Hostess #120 and 1988 ProCards #308.
