The front: Some obvious airbrushing on what appears to be a
photo of Ripley with the Red Sox at Fenway Park. The orange on Ripley’s hat and
jersey is much too red.
The back: Ripley’s long minor league career doesn’t leave
room for a blurb.
The player: Ripley pitched for the Red Sox, Giants and Cubs
from 1978 to 1982. In 101 games (67 starts), he went 23-27 with a 4.52 ERA.
The man: “Rip” was the son of a former Red Sox pitcher, Walt
Ripley, and was known for being one of several Red Sox pitchers who clashed
with team management in the late 1970s. He died of cancer in 2014.
My collection: I have ten of his cards, from 1979 to 1983. I
would be interested in trading for 1978 SSPC #188.
