The flagship Macy's at Herald Square, built in 1902, is famous for many things. One of those is the last set of wooden escalators in New York City. The escalators date back to the expansion of the store in the 1920s. These have miraculously survived the many modernizations to the store over the years and are a favorite of "handrailfans" around the world.
While I was in Macy's I took a wallet card photo of another fixture that dates back to the earliest days of the store as well. Though it is much more obscure than the escalators, it does have its own set of fans. I will show that in a future post....
