I have two cards of Evel Bastida-Martinez. This one is from 2003 Topps Total.
Playing career: Second baseman Evel Bastida-Martinez played
in the Mariners and Orioles organizations from 2002 to 2004, after leaving his
wife and children to defect from Cuba in 2000. In 199 games, mostly at Class-A
level, he hit .250 with 9 HR, 68 RBI and 25 SB.
Interesting facts: In 2003 he charged the mound with a bat
after being hit by the Lancaster JetHawks’ Josh Kranawetter, hitting him in the
back. Bastida-Martinez was arrested and plead guilty to misdemeanor assault,
serving 200 hours of community service.
My memories: Only know him from his card.
Where he is now: Anyone know where Evel Bastida-Martinez is
now?
Google Autocomplete results: He is third when you type Evel
Bas, ahead of Evel Knievel Baseball Bat. In 1977 the daredevil attacked a
reporter with a bat, breaking the reporter’s arm and earning Knievel six months
in jail time. I guess all Evels are dangerous with a bat. There do not appear
to be any other prominent Evel Bastida-Martinezes.
Coming up next: The next profile will be Richard Batchelor.
His name sounds like "Evil Bastard Martinez."
ReplyDeleteYes, I realize that was not the most-mature observation I have ever made...
What an awesome coincidence about the Evel bat wielding...
