Player Profile: Luis Aponte

I have seven cards of Luis Aponte. This one is from 1983 Donruss.

Playing career: Luis Aponte was a middle reliever for the Red Sox and Indians from 1980 to 1984, going 9-6 with 7 saves and a 3.27 ERA.

Where he is now: Aponte was a scout for the Indians for many years, signing several future major leaguers, including Victor Martinez. He retired after a scandal involving falsifying the ages of signees below the age of sixteen. He is now dedicated to his farm and preaching Gospel.

Interesting stories: Aponte pitched in the famous 33-inning game between Pawtucket and Rochester in 1981. He is the player in the well-known story who came home at 3:00 am and his wife wouldn’t let him in the house because she didn’t believe he had been at the ballpark the whole time.
