Player profile: Jim Acker
I have 20 cards of Jim Acker. This one is from 1986 Fleer.
Playing Career: Jim Acker pitched ten seasons as a reliever for Toronto, Atlanta, and Seattle. Unlike Jeremy Accardo or Juan Acevedo, he was actually pretty consistent. While his last two seasons were terrible, his ERAs were almost all in the high threes and low fours. He pitched very well in the postseason, giving up just one earned run in thirteen innings in appearances stretched out over all three Toronto ALCS series losses.
My Memories: I had a bunch of baseball cards of him as a kid but no specific playing memories.
Where he is now: He has had a successful post-baseball career. He was part of the group that sold an oil field servicing business to Key Energy for $46 million. More recently he has been involved with a cotton and sorghum farming company called Four Wives Ltd.
Interesting Fact: Brother Bill Acker played five seasons in the NFL.
Google Autocomplete Results: He is seventh when you type in Jim Ac, between Jim acts like Dwight, the plot of an episode of The Office, and Jim Ackley, a TV repairman. Another prominent Jim Acker is an oceanographer who works at NASA’s Goddard Earth Sciences center.
Coming up next: The next profile will be Mark Acre.
