Terror on the Basepaths - A Baseball Card Horror Story for Friday the 13th
TERROR ON THE BASEPATHS - It all started one fateful day in October, moments before Game One of the World Series in Kansas City. Two bases leap from their positions on the basepaths, and quickly devour Cardinal star Vince Coleman. Authorities try to hush it up, pretending that Coleman was put out of action by a malfunctioning tarpulin machine.
The cover-up does not succeed for long, however, as more and more ballplayers are devoured by marauding bases.
Kenny Lofton is overtaken by three bases in Atlanta, forcing the terrified speedster against the outfield wall before making him their afternoon snack.
A terrified Greg Colbrunn is chased by two rampaging bases during a game in San Francisco. He is never seen or heard from again.
A base in Milwaukee disguises itself as a pillow, luring a sleepy Jaime Navarro into their deadly clutches.
Finally forced to admit there is a problem, Commissioner Bud Selig reluctantly calls the Diamond Skills, a mercenary duo out of Pittsburgh, who are able to kill the ferocious bases, finally ending the panic.
Hall-of-Famers Lou Brock and Rickey Henderson acquire one of the base corpses from the Diamond Skills, branding it with the number '939' to hang in their '939' club, honoring great base-stealers, including the victims Coleman and Lofton, who surely would have reached that number in steals had they not been tragically cut down by the monster bases.
Great post! When I saw the title I was hoping that you'd include Rickey somewhere :)
