Nick Hundley on baseball cards

Catcher Nick Hundley played 12 seasons in the major leagues, including seven for the Padres. In 974 career games, he hit .247 with 93 HR and 376 RBI. Now Senior Director of Baseball Operations for Major League Baseball, he kindly answered my questions about baseball cards.

"A little baseball card story about my first ever pro card. When I had just signed and went to short season ball in Eugene Oregon, I got the worst pants ever. They were way too short and wouldn’t stay down. So the Emeralds baseball card comes out, and mine is of me rounding second base and my pants are halfway between my shins and knee caps. From that day on I vowed if I ever made it to the big leagues, I would get the biggest pants I could to make up for it. My favorite card is a Chet Lemon Tigers card. We lived on Lemon Drive growing up so he was my favorite player for a long time. And yes I did collect baseball cards growing up, probably still have them in boxes somewhere."

Thanks!

  1. Great story! Those pants definitely look too short for him.

  2. Hah! That's a great story, and he's a good sport to recount it for you.

  3. Didn't they used to refer to pants like that as "high-waters"?
